Help! My library holds are out of control!

  • Jul. 19th, 2009 at 4:14 PM

Just when I thought it was safe to get a few more of Mary Stewart's out from the library and catch up on her back list, wouldn't you know it but those purchase requests and holds on upcoming releases are all coming to roost at once. Well, almost all of them - keeping my fingers crossed so more don't land on my hold shelf. So waiting for pick up is my latest Library Loot,

Leaden Skies is the third in a series of historical mysteries by Ann Parker, set in late 19C Leadville Colorado. I quite enjoyed the first two.

The French Mistress is Holloway Scott's third novel on the mistresses of Charles II.

Sacred Hearts is the latest from Sarah Dunant, and despite the fact that The Birth of Venus did major wall damage, there's enough buzz I thought I'd give it a whirl.

King's Fool is another one of Margaret Campbell Barne's books to be dusted off and given a new life by Sourcebooks.

Richard III the Young King to Be by Josephine Wilkinson. Not sure if I still want to read this, I placed a purchase request months ago (as well as for King's Fool) and they finally decided to buy it. Better give it a shot for their trouble though.

Library loot is hosted by Eva and Marg - and don't forget just because it's not in the catalog don't be afraid to put in a purchase and/or ILL request. You'd be amazed what they can do, very rarely do they come back and say we can't get it for you.

Leaden Skies ... about the missing Author's Note ...
So glad to see my Leaden Skies on your "Library Loot" list! Silver Rush author Ann Parker here, with just a quick caution: The Author's Note that usually appears in the back of my books went mysteriously missing in the printing process for Leaden Skies. (The Author's Note contains nifty background info such as "what's real, what's not," references and resources, and so on.) If you would like to view the Note, it's available as a downloadable pdf on my website at
http://www.annparker.net/book.htm
Look under the Leaden Skies cover for the "Click to read the Author's Note" link.
Happy reading!

Ann, thanks for the info. I'll be looking up the notes after I've read the book.

I've been thinking about reading the Leadville mystery series - I've got a whole section of the living room bookcases dedicated to mystery series, so why not add this series as well? I just got my last library hold book - Amanda Quick's newest - yes, a guilty pleasure!

I really enjoyed the first two, although definitely library books for me - not sure if I'll read them twice. I've been through Leadville, quite an interesting city.

About me

After spending the day job chasing contractors for money I like nothing better than to settle down into my favorite chair with a book and the cat and immerse myself in the past. I've been reviewing on Amazon for several years and just started this LJ blog for fun and to share my love of books with others. I must be doing something right, last time I checked Amazon said I had 49 fans!

I get most of my books from the library with the occasional ARC from Amazon Vine (although my success rate with that program is poor to middling). I know most people shy from writing critical reviews and maintain the old adage "if you can't say something nice...." but after making the mistake of reading Pillars of the Earth I discovered that if I had looked at those one and two star reviews I would have thought twice before wasting time and money. Not every book is for every person - even with those I have very similar reading tastes.

Favorite authors (in no particular order), Sharon Kay Penman, Elizabeth Chadwick, Dorothy Dunnett, Anya Seton, Daphne Du Maurier and last but not least Dumas Pere'.
